Every automated decision needs a human address

Behind every AI decision about a person there must be someone accountable, reachable and able to change the outcome.

Automated systems now decide, or strongly suggest, who gets a loan, a job interview, an appointment or a refund. When those decisions go wrong, people too often find that there is no one to answer for them. “The system decided” is not an answer.

Our position

Responsibility for a decision made or shaped by AI always rests with a person or an institution, never with the software. Anyone affected by such a decision has the right to an explanation they can understand, and the right to contest it before a human who has the authority to change it.

What this means in practice

  • Every automated decision process has a named owner who is accountable for its outcomes.
  • People receive the main reasons behind a decision that affects them, in plain language.
  • There is a clear, accessible route to a human review, with a real chance of a different result.
  • Errors are recorded and used to correct the system, not explained away.

Why it matters

Accountability is what keeps power in check. If no one is answerable for what an AI system does, the people it affects lose the most basic protection a fair society offers: the ability to be heard.
